This is the story of a group of best friends. If you haven't heard about The xx, prepare for your crash course. Romy Croft, James Smith and Oliver Smith met while studying at Elliott School. Starting the band as a duo Oliver Sim and Romy Madley Croft were only 15. Guitarist Baria Qureshi joined the band once it began to perform in 2005, leaving in 2009. After being introduced to Caius Pawson, the head of Young Turks (Record Company), Jamie Smith (aka Jamie xx) joined the band. They discovered their love for music together. This alternative indie pop group took millennials by storm back in 2009 with their self titled album 'The xx'. Featuring hits such as the much famed 'Intro' and Crystallized, The xx was not prepared in the slightest for the amount of success that was headed their way. Their next album 'Coexist' a risky release. Though it was a huge success, the band believed that with the overwhelming success of their first album, their second was sure to flop. Boy were they wrong. Not only did this album lead to even more success, but it also allowed band member Jamie xx to release his record 'In Colour' in 2015. Fast forwarding to 2017, The xx released one of the best albums of the year titled 'I See You'. Their first single 'On Hold' shocked a lot of people, due to its new sound. The xx has clearly evolved from its iconic sounds and progressed to more new age synths and beats. Following this album was a tour, the 'I See You' world tour.
They were also huge festival headliners this year. Headlining festivals such as Glastonbury, Lollapalooza (Berlin) and Austin City Limits (Both Weekends), their year has been jam packed to say the least. If you recall, back in October we had the opportunity to attend the Austin City Limits Music Festival. At the time of The xx's set closing Day 1 of the festival, Jay-Z was performing. Can you guess who we saw?
“You know, we’re not stupid,” Oliver Sim said during their headlining set at ACL Fest. “We knew we were going up against Jay-Z. We were fully prepared for there to be six people out here.” Next year The xx will head out on their Asian leg of the 'I See You Tour'.
